| Ms Beata M. Macur (Bociąga) was admitted to the Degree of Master of Engineering Science (Research) at Monash University on 18 October 2012. Ms Macur had been an external postgraduate student with the then UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE), based at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, between 1994 and 2008. The research project undertaken by Ms Macur, completed in 2011, is entitled Geelong’s approach to the recycling process and domestic waste problems in the context of economic and environmental sustainability. She was supervised by Professor Zenon J. Pudlowski, the then UICEE Director. The research presented in her dissertation highlights a range of issues related to the identification of the impact of waste on the environment and the consequences for everyday life. It is approached through a review of the literature and practical knowledge of aspects of waste management, and how this new discipline is shaping the waste industry of Australia and worldwide. As part of her academic endeavour, Ms Macur has published several peer-refereed conference papers and journal articles. These integrated important issues such as the impact of her research on engineering and technology education and, in particular, on the inclusion of environmental issues in the education process of future engineers and technologists. Her graduation represents the conclusion of the higher degree programme established at the UICEE, and executed well beyond its existence, with three highly successful doctorates and four master degrees having been awarded.
